Genealogia acadêmica e endogenia nos programas de pós-graduação stricto sensu de turismo no Brasil

Abstract

This article analyzes the academic genealogy and levels of endogeny in the twelve graduate programs (stricto sensu) affiliated with ANPTUR, focusing on faculty training, supervisory relationships, and the professional placement of graduates. The research stems from the understanding of tourism as a scientific field still in the process of consolidation in Brazil, with a training structure that reveals traits of immobility and restricted reproduction of academic staff. The methodology is quantitative, employing descriptive analysis based on manually collected data from the Lattes curricula of 203 accredited faculty members (as of September 21, 2023), their doctoral advisors, and their own master’s and doctoral students (1,084 master's and 154 doctoral titles). Training trajectories, areas of expertise, and institutional affiliations were mapped, and endogeneity metrics were calculated by institution and federative unit. The results reveal a strong concentration of supervision among a few faculty members and low academic continuity: less than 8% of master's graduates pursued doctoral studies, and only 11% of those did so in the field of tourism. Most graduates work in public higher education institutions, particularly federal institutes. The average institutional endogeneity rate was 21.18% (doctoral degree obtained at the same institution) and 40.89% at the territorial level (partial or total training at the same institution). The study concludes that, although the field has expanded, concentrated training patterns persist, presenting challenges to academic mobility and diversification of academic ties. This scenario calls for public policies that strengthen the area and promote the circulation of knowledge across institutions. The main limitation of the research is that it focuses on current accredited faculty members – and, consequently, their doctoral advisors and advisees – without considering the entire history of the programs.
