Abstract
Sports Nutrition plays a crucial role in athletic performance and is a constantly evolving discipline that seeks to optimize nutrition for athletes. Applied Sports Nutrition will be integrated as an extension course into the curriculum of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in 2022. The proposal for the course to be implemented as an extension program for athletes at the Iron Legion Sports Consulting Center was created. The consulting center does not have a contracted sports nutritionist, so many athletes lack nutritional support and face significant dietary challenges to achieve their athletic goals. Students enrolled in the course participated in six different teams. Each team supported their athlete and carried out the activities proposed for the semester, under the supervision of the professor. At the end of the course, a student experience survey was conducted. The following activities were developed: assessment of athletes' body composition, anamnesis of their current energy intake, interpretation of current energy intake results, and feedback to athletes regarding their energy needs; track running tests with athletes and students; and planning and calculation of meal plans for moderate- to high-complexity runners and triathletes. Four visits were conducted with the athletes and coaches, benefiting six company employees and 46 students enrolled in the course. By the end of the course, the students not only understood the theory but were able to apply their knowledge adaptively, recognizing diversity and promoting health through Sports Nutrition.
