Abstract
Leprosy is a contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Evidence has shown that genetic susceptibility factors influence the development of the disease. The SNPs in the IRGM gene are candidates for association with the disease, however, this investigation had not yet been carried out in the population of Alagoas. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of rs13361189-IRGM and leprosy in the population of the rural region of Alagoas. A case-control study was carried out, including individuals without leprosy (control) and individuals with leprosy (cases), whose biological material collected was peripheral whole blood that was submitted to laboratory procedures. When comparing the frequencies of the CC genotype between the groups, a frequency of 4% in cases and 3% in controls is observed, resulting in OR values that indicate absence of association between the studied SNP and leprosy (OR= 1.37 and p-value=0.68). In all genetic models, the analyzes showed no association between the aforementioned SNP and leprosy. The study provides information that contributes to knowledge about the genetic markers associated with leprosy in Brazil.
