Desinformação: sentidos políticos e saídas possíveis para as fake news

Abstract

This critical review analyzes the work Disinformation: Political Meanings and Possible Solutions for Fake News, organized by Helena Martins, published in 2020 by Editora Veneta in partnership with Intervozes – Coletivo Brasil de Comunicação Social. The book, by addressing the topic beyond the simplistic concept of fake news, highlights the intentionality present in the circulation of false news and its interrelation with political, economic, and social issues. By organizing the debate into three main chapters, the book offers both a historical perspective—tracing episodes of defamation and information manipulation since antiquity—and a critical analysis of the effects of disinformation in the current digital environment. In the current context, the work emphasizes the importance of understanding disinformation as a deliberate strategy, relying on intentionality and political direction, allowing the manipulation of public discourse and the promotion of interests that favor the concentration of power in large digital platforms. Furthermore, the book highlights how the monetization of attention and the exploitation of personal data pose new challenges for regulating information flows and ensuring a democratic and ethical communication environment. Thus, the review proposes a reflection on the need for mechanisms that integrate algorithmic transparency, data protection, and state regulation, pointing out ways to mitigate the impacts of disinformation.
