O americano James Thurber (1894-1961) escreveu muitas histórias de ficção com forte teor biográfico nas quais ele graciosamente expõe circunstâncias da vida real envolvendo diferentes tipos de insultos e abusos, variando de simples reprovações advindas de rostos familiares até comentários agressivos por completos estranhos. Sua literatura mostra, por meio das atitudes dos personagens, como lidar com tais situações de forma digna e respeitosa. Também mostra como o mundo gira e como as ações têm consequências e como os antagonistas às vezes, naturalmente, encontram seu destino. O corpus para investigação inclui o conto “The Gentleman is Cold” e a fábula “The Glass in the Field”. A literatura científica sobre a dinâmica da agressão e estudos comportamentais de perpetradores e vítimas lançam luz sobre a análise. As conclusões se aproximam de como, em última análise, o humor e a compaixão são formas válidas e frutíferas de lidar com ofensas e menosprezo.
