Júlia Lopes de Almeida and Kate Chopin were writers and intellectuals from the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. Both had similar paths regarding the reception of their works: esteemed at the time of publication and, later, ignored by the main means of dissemination and literary and critical circulation. This paper analyzes the representation of space and women's roles in the novel A viúva Simões, by Almeida, and in the short story The story of an hour, by Chopin. In these works, several portraits of different female identities are presented, which promote, in turn, the discussion of a theme dear to the production of these authors, namely the investigation of female subjectivity, which is revealed mainly in the most intimate desires and longings of their protagonists.
