O conto em Antônio Carlos Viana: Um recorte social

Abstract

His paper aims to discuss short stories by the writer from Sergipe, Antônio Carlos Viana, focusing on how his narratives critically and sensitively address themes related to social issues and problems. Initially, we will present a brief theoretical reflection on the literary short story, highlighting its structural and stylistic characteristics, based on the contributions of Gotlib (2010) and Moisés (2009), who analyze the genre’s conciseness, intensity, and impact. Next, we will discuss specific stories in which the narrators appear perplexed and, at times, powerless in the face of poverty, abandonment, and marginalization affecting their lives, in light of reflections by Martins (2018) and other scholars who have studied this fictional universe. We will also offer a brief historiographical overview of the author’s literary trajectory, considering his critical reception and significance in the national literary scene. Finally, with support from Perrone’s (2023) ideas, we will examine how social engagement permeates his work, provoking reflection in the reader.
