Abstract

Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people and can lead to complications such as diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot, increasing the risk of ulcers and limb amputations. Health education is essential to prevent these complications by promoting autonomy and self-care. For this reason, students from the Academic League of Endocrinology and Metabology (LAEM) at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL) developed the e-book “Diabetic Foot and Its Care”, structured into six chapters covering  topics from definition and symptoms to foot care and footwear guidance. This material was designed with accessible language and illustrative images, and it was published in February 2024 by Atena Publishing. It is also used in extension activities at the Unidade Docente Assistencial Prof. Gilberto de Macedo. The e-book strengthens the doctor-patient relationship and improves treatment adherence while also impacting students' education by bringing them closer to the social reality of patients. Despite challenges, such as the need for technology to access the material, the e-book supports the entire multidisciplinary team in promoting self-care. Thus, it represents an effective health education strategy, contributing to the prevention of complications and the dissemination of knowledge, reinforcing the integration between education, healthcare, and outreach in medical training.
